ON THE ROAD TO ALANG recounts Peter Knego’s first visit to one of the world’s largest shipbreaking yards to document and salvage fittings from a perfect storm of classic liners gathered together for a final time on a ten mile stretch of Gujarati beach called Alang.  Captured in this 2004 pilgrimage are once-celebrated ships like the S SOLAR (ex STELLA SOLARIS), the SALONA (ex IVERNIA/FRANCONIA), NEW ORLEANS (ex ARGENTINA), APOLLO (ex EMPRESS OF CANADA/MARDI GRAS), GENOA (ex SYLVANIA/FAIRWIND), ASSEDO (ex SHOTA RUSTAVELI), MAYAN EMPRESS (ex WINSTON CHURCHILL), S OCEAN (ex STELLA OCEANIS) and BIG BOAT (ex TRANSVAAL CASTLE/FESTIVALE).

Through often heartbreaking but fascinating imagery, witness the stranded ships and see the marketplace where their furnishings and artwork are sold.  Knego also includes footage of the salvaged fittings being delivered to his home in Moorpark, California months after the visit.

The 60 minute all-region DVD concludes with a “Molten Memoriam”, a roll call of key ships broken up prior to Knego’s first visit.

ON THE ROAD TO ALANG is the first in a series of videos about key passenger ships that have gone to Alang for demolition.  It was followed in 2013 by THE SANDS OF ALANG, which details Knego’s visits in 2005 to salvage fittings from the former Costa Line flagship EUGENIO C.
