Peter Knego’s third Alang feature brings us back to the beach in India where so many important liners ended their days. On this visit, while waiting to board a craft that will take us out to the partially demolished RITA, there is time to reflect on the career of this once sensational ship.
Built in 1960 as the RMS WINDSOR CASTLE for Union-Castle Line’s U.K. to South Africa service, she was launched by the Queen Mother Elizabeth in a ceremony attended by thousands and seen by millions on live television.
Her design and 17 year career as the largest liner to ever operate regular voyages between Southampton and Durban is recalled by the late historian Peter Newall, former Union-Castle purserette Ann Haynes and historian Ted Scull, who was a tourist class passenger in 1968.
Also included is rare footage taken in Greece when she was laid up after serving as the accommodation ship MARGARITA L before Knego takes us back aboard for that sad but fascinating final visit in India.
In addition, there are two bonus tracks offering virtual tours of the ship as RMS WINDSOR CASTLE and again as MARGARITA L.
